  •

Fortebraccio Hotel and Spa is located immediately outside the walls of Montone, one of Umbria’s beautifully preserved medieval hilltop villages.

Montone overlooks the Upper Tiber Valley and offers the atmosphere many travelers hope to find when they come to Italy: narrow stone streets, historic churches, village restaurants, spectacular scenery and an authentic Italian lifestyle. Italy’s national tourism site describes Montone as a hilltop medieval village overlooking the Carpina River and Upper Tiber valleys. (Italia.it)

The location is especially valuable because the hotel sits near the meeting point of Umbria, Tuscany and the Marche, making it an exceptional base for exploring central Italy. (Hotel Fortebraccio)

  • One of the greatest advantages of staying in Montone is the remarkable number of world-class destinations within easy driving distance.

Instead of changing hotels every few days, unpack once at Fortebraccio Hotel and Spa and use Montone as your home base for exploring central Italy.

Here are some of our favorites:

Florence is approximately 82 miles from Montone and about 1 hour and 45 minutes by car, making it a very achievable full-day excursion. (Rome2Rio)

    SIENA - APPROXIMATELY 69 MILES

Few cities capture medieval Tuscany better than Siena. The magnificent shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, Siena Cathedral, narrow pedestrian streets and historic neighborhoods make this one of Italy's most memorable cities. Siena is approximately 69 miles from Montone and about 1 hour and 50 minutes by car. It pairs beautifully with Cortona for an unforgettable Tuscany driving day. (Rome2Rio)

    SPELLO - APPROXIMATELY 37 MILES

Spello is one of Umbria's most charming small towns, known for ancient Roman gates, stone lanes, balconies overflowing with flowers, local restaurants and beautiful views across the Umbrian valley. It offers a quieter and more intimate experience than some of Italy's larger tourist destinations. Spello is approximately 37 miles from Montone and about 50 minutes by car. (Rome2Rio)

    MONTEFALCO - APPROXIMATELY 44 MILES

Known as the Balcony of Umbria, Montefalco sits high above vineyards and olive groves and is the center of one of Italy's most fascinating wine regions. The area is particularly famous for Sagrantino di Montefalco, a distinctive Umbrian red wine. Spend the afternoon visiting wineries, enjoying a long Italian lunch and walking the historic center. Montefalco is approximately 44 miles from Montone and just over an hour by car. (Rome2Rio)

LAKE TRASIMENO - APPROXIMATELY 24 MILES

    DERUTA - APPROXIMATELY 35–40 MILES

For centuries, Deruta has been synonymous with beautiful hand-painted Italian ceramics. The town is filled with artisan workshops, studios and shops where visitors can see traditional techniques and purchase pieces directly from local craftsmen. Gubbio is only approximately 21 miles from Montone and about 35–40 minutes by car. (Rome2Rio)

TUSCANY - BEGINNING APPROXIMATELY 20–30 MILES FROM THE HOTEL

You don't need to change hotels to experience Tuscany. Montone sits close to the Umbrian-Tuscan border, allowing you to easily drive into Tuscany for the day. Cortona is only about 27 miles away, while countless Tuscan villages, wineries, restaurants and scenic roads are within reach. Siena and Florence can both be experienced as full-day excursions. Fortebraccio specifically describes Montone and the Upper Tiber Valley as bordering Tuscany and promotes the hotel as a base for exploring nearby Tuscany. (Hotel Fortebraccio)

UMBRIAN WINERIES - APPROXIMATELY 15–45 MILES

One of the great pleasures of staying in Umbria is discovering wineries that are considerably less commercialized than many of the more famous Tuscan wine estates. Depending upon the winery selected, guests can find wine experiences within approximately 15 to 45 miles of Montone. Venture farther south toward Montefalco for celebrated Sagrantino wines, or discover smaller estates throughout the Umbrian countryside. Fortebraccio itself promotes winery tastings among the signature experiences available from the hotel. (Hotel Fortebraccio)

MEDIEVAL VILLAGES & HILL TOWNS - BEGINNING JUST MINUTES FROM THE HOTEL

You do not have to drive an hour to find extraordinary Italy. Montone itself is one of the region's beautiful medieval villages, and the surrounding Upper Tiber Valley is filled with historic communities such as Umbertide, Città di Castello, Citerna, Pietralunga and Monte Santa Maria Tiberina. Many are within roughly 5 to 20 miles of the hotel, making them perfect for relaxed mornings, afternoon drives or spontaneous lunches.
